Freezing temperatures drop quick in Alaska usually starting in the month of October,
which means ice fishing season is right around the horizon. The ice had formed clear and thick enough to fish on
by the first week of November this season, so without hesitation my buddies and I set out to catch some rainbow trout
and of course chronicle the experience on video. Quartz Lake, a local favorite, was our destination for the first outing.
Upon arriving we saw the lake had a cover of snow and after drilling some test holes we determined the ice was about 7 inches,
solid, and safe enough to fish. We decided to set up a portable hut to stay warm and eventually the heaters inside melted the snow
cover to reveal a clear display of the lake bottom below us. The crystal clear ice enabled us to see everything as if we were fishing
on a window pane. Fishing was not fast paced, however the quality of the fish that came into view and tried to sample the presented offerings
was excellent. We were able to video a couple nice size trout being fought on our ice sticks, capturing the view we had from above, and the
excitement of watching the dancing trout fight on the end of our lines as we tried to guide them to the open hole. It was very memorable to
sit on top the ice and watch the activity below our feet, even better was to video the moment and share it with others.

Trophy Video Winter Award |
Congratulations SalmonJediMaster
on his Trophy Video
Clear Ice.
His title Clear Ice says it all. The ice is almost crystal clear with a
great view of the fish fighting below and a couple of nice looking trout
to boot. To see the weeds and fish so clearly in the video is a neat
perspective and one we have come to know from SalmonJediMaster.
Want to see big trout, salmon, pike and much more, be sure to check out
his videos and pictures for top shelf fish.
Congratulations bigcox
for his second place video
Windy Chaos,
which captures a triple on Windy Lake and what seems like tight lines
all day. If you have not viewed any of bigcox's
content, be sure to check out his library of videos and
pictures to see some great looking fish and well done videos.
And don't forget to check out
Alaskan Salmon Slayers to learn
much more about fishing opportunities in Alaska, including current
reports, locations, galleries and much more.

Thank you to all of our members who shared videos during the 2011
season. We always enjoy watching new videos and seeing your action on
the water and in the field. Have a great 2012 and we look forward to
watching more great videos.
